Saltire Estate
The name Saltire comes from the name of the Scottish Flag, the Saint Andrew’s Cross, one of the oldest and respected flags in the world and is pronounced ‘saul tyre’. Saltire recognises the original Scottish historic roots of the region and the Scottish connection to viticulture in the Hunter.
The region is named after the Scotsman, Sir John Hunter from Leith in Edinburgh and the first person to do a major planting of vines in the Hunter was the Scotsman James Busby also from Edinburgh.
We want to produce great wines and only the best fruit will be used in wine bearing the Saltire label.
While based in the Hunter, Saltire aims to become a regional champion producing wine from other regions of Australia if we can source top quality fruit. While our Hunter whites and reds are our focus, we have also produced a Clare Valley Reisling and a McLaren Vale Shiraz .
The business was founded with the purchase of the vineyard, located at 113 Wilderness Road, Lovedale.
The old growth vines, dating back as early as 1970, are comprised of the regional staples of Shiraz, Semillon and Chardonnay alongside a small amount of Merlot.
The vineyards have a long history of producing premium fruit and award winning wines, a tradition that Saltire Wines has continued with strong medal and trophy winning performances at a number of recent wine shows.
As you drive through the property, you drive over our large dam which hugs the long winding driveway and supplies water to the vineyard.
The vineyard is home to local wildlife including a large mob of kangaroos which means it is rare not to see them when you visit us.
Several olive orchards add to the picturesque nature of the vineyard and a mixture of olives for eating and pressing into olive oil are grown throughout the property.
